things i've been wondering about..

Published

I am going to finish my degree and hopefully become an RN. My questions are: how much math is there in nursing school?? (i am not good in math and didn't do so hot in Chemistry) I made excellent grades in my other prerequisites (A&P, biology, micro etc) but it's been almost 8 years since i was in school so will i need to be "refreshed" on these subjects? Will i need to retake them? anyone has suggestions on this or been in my situation and gotten through it? Also, i have a 2 year old and a 1 year old right now. Is having 2 younger kiddos going to make me have a rough time? PLEASE, i need all the support and answers i can get.. thanks!

The school I went to required things like A&P and Micro to have been taken within the past 5 years. You will need to check your school and see what they require.

AS far as math goes, I'm not great in math but I can do enough to get by. You will need math in NS. You generally need to be able to pass a basic med calc test.

As far as the kids, no one can really explain to you have rough it can be. I had three kids at home, ages 8, 6, and 2. I spent so much time studying I missed out on a lot of things. Thankfully I have a great husband who picked up the slack for me.

I remember registering for my first set of night classes and driving home realizing that I was going to miss family dinners. I cried all the way home.

Hi K,

i think you will do fine , you sound dedicated and with some support from your freinds and family you wil do fine.

Good Luck!

My school also required that A&P and some other classes be taken within a certain number of years for them to count. There is some math in nursing of course, but it is not too bad once you learn the formulas and how to set the questions up. It may be beneficial to see if your nursing school offers a part-time status d/t your increased family demands. Good luck :)

The school I go to only requires basic Algebra. I recently retook the class because we have to pass a math proficiency test. The science classes have to be taken within 5 years of the start date of the program. Thats why I waited to take those last.

It also depends on your program. If you're doing a BSN program then you'll more likely need two math classes as pre-reqs. If not two you'll definetely need one math class which is usually 9 times out of 10 always statistics. Then within the program most schools have you take either a medication calculation class (math) and med math tests throughout the nursing program (usually once or twice a semester) or just the tests. Your entrance exam (if your school has one) will more likely also have some kind of math on it.
