If staff are charting a resident did not ambulate at all 8/8 can we count ambulation in the therapy dep't for ADL section ??? some say yes--some say no---work at a Pa. nsg home ---

does the question specify ambulate in room or on unit and off unit? I feel that ambulation in therapy is seperate if it is short distances, say 5-10 ft., but if they are ambulating with therapy 75-100 ft, they are either in the hall or making laps around the therapy room, either way I would count it, but the amout of assist they give compared to what we code, may be different. check with your therapy and supervisors.

Our therapy department gives us their ADL scores with every therapy minute tracker. Alot of times I can get the score I need using therapy ADL's :)

The definition for Walking points to the resident's room and the corridor of his unit. Therefore, capture the activity only if the therapist actually provides treatments in the resident's room or the corridor of his unit. Walking while off unit or distant area in a therapy room is not. Here's an example (RAI, G-12)-

5. Mr. J. is attending physical therapy for transfer and gait training. He does not ambulate on the unit or in his room at this time. He calls for assistance to stand pivot to a commode next to his bed.

Coding:

  • G0110C1 would be coded 8, activity did not occur.
  • G0110C2 would be coded 8, ADL activity itself did not occur during entire period.
  • Rationale: Activity did not occur.
