Texas Licensing

Published

I will be graduating in May with my BSN. I am planning on relocating to Texas if I can get a job there. Would it be better for me to take my NCLEX in Texas? I was planning on taking the NCLEX in Hawaii because that is where I am currently living but I don't know how difficult it would be for me to obtain a secondary Texas license if I take the NCLEX in Hawaii?

You can take the NCLEX anywhere it is offered. For example, you can apply to the Texas Board of Nursing to obtain initial licensure in that state and take NCLEX for Texas while still living in Hawaii; the results will be transmitted to the Texas BON, and if you pass, you will receive a permanent Texas RN license.

Or you can apply to the Hawaii Board of Nursing for initial licensure, obtain a permanent HI license and then obtain a Texas RN license by endorsement at a later date. The process of endorsing another state's license into Texas is relatively easy as long as you have no sanctions on your original license.

Thecommuter: Getting licensed in Hawaii is pretty pointless since there are no RN positions here for new grads. It's ridiculous. Anyway I can sit for NCLEX in Hawaii and get a Texas license instead of a Hawaii one? Do you happen to know the website to apply for a license in Texas?

Yes. I had thought the first paragraph of my post above clearly indicated that a person can take NCLEX for Texas while still physically present in Hawaii or any other state, country or territory.

Yes. Click on this link: Examination Applications

Can I qualify for a temporary GN license in Texas if I am graduating in Hawaii?
