Question

Tentative offer from VA

Hey guys. I'm at excited to finally get a tenant offer by the VA. I have been applying for over four years. Over my 7 year career, I been a travel nurses but have one blip. I was terminated from my next to last position (Staff). It was not a good fit and more fast paced than I ever had before. I was terminated not due to injury or theft but lack of performance. Do you think the VA would reject me because of this?

First off, a huge congratulations on landing that tentative offer after four years of persistence. Getting into the VA system is a major milestone in a Florida nursing career, and your dedication to the process shows exactly the kind of resilience we value in the Sunshine State.

The VA hiring process is notoriously thorough, but a single termination for performance in a fast paced environment is rarely a deal breaker if you handle it with transparency. Federal background checks and credentialing through VetPro focus heavily on your overall clinical history and your standing with the State Nursing Boards.

The VA Credentialing Reality

The VA uses a peer review process for appointments. They are looking for a pattern of safe practice rather than one specific instance where a unit culture or pace was not a good fit. Since your termination was not related to patient safety violations, diversion, or ethical lapses, you are in a much stronger position than you might think.

How to Navigate the Next Steps:

  • Be Transparent: If asked on your VetPro or OF-306 forms, be honest but concise. Use professional language like, "The clinical pace and unit structure were not an optimal match for my professional strengths at that time."
  • Highlight Your Travel Success: You have seven years of experience, including travel nursing. This proves you are adaptable and capable of performing in diverse Florida hospital systems.
  • Verify Your License: Ensure your multi-state license is in good standing. You can check your status and any regulatory updates through the U.S. Boards of Nursing portal.
  • Focus on Compensation: VA pay scales are different than private sector "snowbird" seasonal rates. Make sure you review the Nursing Salaries: Specialty Pay & State Wage Data to understand how your years of experience will translate to your Step and Grade.

The VA values the longevity and diverse experience you bring from your travel roles. Do you know which specific VA Tier or Grade they are looking at for your placement?
