Hello everyone, I am new to site; need some help; considering a move to TN; interested in school nursing or possibly hospice nursing; anyone know anything about job availability or requirements in these areas? coming from MD; I know I'll have to take big pay cut but also realize COL is lower; any suggestions on making the transition? thanks:uhoh21:

I'm sorry I don't specifically know about those two areas. But welcome to TN. Do you know what part of the state you are moving to?

I do know that hospice nursing positions are readily available, but I'm not so sure about school nursing. School nurses around here are paid a considerably lower salary. Contact our health department for open school nurse positions. All our major hospitals such as Baptist and Methodist have very good hospice positions.

I actually have a friend that just interviewed for a full time school nurse position today in McMinnville (Middle TN area). She's a new grad RN but was an LPN for about 9 years before. She was offered $26,000 a year, which is significantly lower than the average RN salary in the area.
I have another friend that works hospice for Caris and loves it. I'm not sure exactly what she makes, but I think she said it was more than what a hospital would pay.

What I do know is that school nurses in Davidson county (Nashville) work for the county health dept, rather than the school board. I do not know what the pay is like for them but I know it's less than bedside nursing. In Hamilton county, where I live, the nurses are employed by the schools but are usually contract employees without benefits (some positions have benefits, so I've heard). The pay is even less than Nashville, from what I hear. Perhaps they're thinking that we could work a bedside position during the summer & make up the difference, eh?
Although I'd love to try school nursing, I need the "bennies." and am unwilling to work 12's at this point, if I can avoid it!
Good luck to you in your move!
