TEAS and HESI

Published

Hi, I was wondering if both the TEAS and HESI exam will test microbiology? I plan to take the exams this summer, but I unfortunately can’t take microbiology until fall 2020 as there are no room for me to join a class.

Not really... more so basic biology than microbiology.

can also apply to the Hesi

I took the HESI a while back and there were not any microbiology questions. You don't need to take microbiology in order to take the HESI. Use the HESI study guide by HESI (ISBN: 9780323353786) to prepare. This study guide helped me well prepare, along with watching videos by Khan Academy and Crash Course. I am not a fan of admission testing but I liked the HESI. I've also taken the PSB-HOA which was harder than the HESI in my opinion.

Best of luck!

Not sure about the HESI because I took the modified one with no science but the TEAS did not, everything you need would be in the curriculum of high school biology.

EVERYTHING ON THE TEST IS IN ATI ONLINE REVIEW. Although the online review is high-yield and rather challenging to comprehend, most of science questions are basic memorization. Reviewing other sources are just a waste of time IMHO. If you feel you need other sources, I recommend using Mcgraw-Hill's Nursing school entrance exam review for the science portion (skip earth science) because it is actually a nice simple review but I still feel its better to focus on ATI.

I've seen you mention the ATI online review a couple of times, but what exactly are you referring to? I have the practice tests, A and B. Are you referring to the smartprep study package that is $250?

Hey guys!

Out of topic here, but what did you guys use to study?
I’m currently taking anatomy and I’m having trouble concentrating since I can’t go to libraries. And how many hours did you guys study for? I can’t study every day since my anatomy class requires all my attention. I’m just feeling so overwhelmed:(

The good news is that studying for your anatomy class IS studying, since the most difficult subject on the TEAS is science, and most of that is A&P.

I bought the Mometrix book, and the study package that includes test A & B. The mometrix book is good for information, but their science practice tests are way too easy IMO. Their other subject tests are harder (go figure). I was also studying A&P, and just got finished prepping for CNA certification, so I don't feel I study as much as I should have.

The A&B tests are a much better indicator. I made the exact same score on test B as the actual exam: 84.7. I didn't study math, reading, English much at all. on all the practice tests I was making in the 90s in reading but scored low to mid-80s on that section on the exam. That was disappointing, but there were a few distractions in the class that called my attention away from the passages. Our proctor was knitting and the sound was driving me crazy. She finally stopped on her on.

@jlmcgrot Thank you for this information. I did purchase the practice test directly through ati and got a 50% my lowest score was on the math section... I got a 20% since I guest on all the questions. I’m really bad at math but I have been studying more on that subject. I kept scoring between 44-50 on the science section without studying since I know some of the content. How many hours did you study for?

I'm not sure how many hours. I ordered the test on 1/19 and tood the test on 2/28. It probably took me a couple of weeks to really start studying (due to A&P 2 ), but I just mainly did the practice tests from the mometrix book and brushed up on anything math I needed help with. I would watch videos about specific scientific topics I would need help with or a refresher on, such as meiosis. I didn't watch any video series completely.

I didn't really study in the traditional sense. Practice tests, some videos, and read through the science section in the mometrix book. I mean, I literally just read through it. I didn't spend time trying to memorize anything like you would in actual class. If I didn't have the A&P class, I could have devoted more time and would have done better, but overall, I'm satisfied with the score.

I also did all the practice tests in the TEAS book that comes with the test.

If you're having trouble with math, work through it. Don't guess. You need to know what you need to work on. Also, A LOT of people have trouble with the time on math...as in they run out of time. That's why it's important you time yourself, work through the problems, and don't guess. You're paid for the practice tests. Get the most from it. You can take each twice.

For math, this guy is one of the best: https://www.bcraftmath.com/atiteas.html

Long story short there is to do practice problems. I also used the practice tests as somewhat of a study guide, so I read over them occasionally. Unfortunately, once you finish test A & B, you can review them.

@jlmcgrot is the actual exam similar to practice A and b? I ati ally have been using it as a study guide especially for the math. CONGRATS on the TEAS by the way:) one less thing to worry about

It's similar to test B (or both really). I thought the science was slightly more difficult on the actual test, but there are also questions that don't count that are thrown in to gauge for future use, so who knows?
