Taking the NCLEX

So I am going to start an ABSN program in a month here in Maine. I will graduate in August of 2009. I want to move to either NYC or Chicago after I graduate, so taking the NCLEX is confusing me.

First, where would I get my ATT? From either NY or IL, or do I need to wait for both if I want my NCLEX results sent to both places?

Also, do I have to be officially graduated from a program to get my ATT or is it done a few weeks before you graduate?

your school will send your name to the state where you went to school in. Like if you go in maine you will have your name sent to MA

now, if you want to be licensed in another state like NYC or IL then you will have to physically go to your school, tell them to send your name to that state.

Once your school has sent your name to the state, you can physically send your individual application to apply to take your NCLEX-RN and pay your licensing fee. For example, here in FL we pay $205

your ATT will be released by pearson vue (a company that administers the test) after they receive your name from the state AND they have received your testing fee now it is $200

your ATT will last 3 months only, and in those three months you have to take the nclex or else you lose your money and will have to REDO EVERYTHING all over again including to pay again.

BTW you can only apply to one state at a time.

Sounds confusing now? but once you get there your school will give you all that info & it won't seem so bad.

And worry about passing school first! worry about NCLEX later!! you will have plenty of time to panic when you are studying, and cry when you are waiting for those nclex results!

good luck in school!!

I forgot to answer your last question.

YES you do have to be already DONE and GRADUATED before you can do all that I mentioned above.

The school needs to have your records that you have completed and passed all pre-reqs and nursing courses in order to send your name to the state board of nursing.

and remember no ATT if your state does not send them your name.

Hi jbeau, I live in Maine too. I've been considering USM for a BSN. I'm 40 though. Many oldtimers like myself going to USM for nursing?

Also, I need to take Algebra, Chemistry and Biology through adult ed before I can apply. Do you recommend any other classes that might help me out? Math and science are difficult for me. This will be a big challenge.

Silly question....can nurses use calculaters?????
