Greetings to all of my fellow nurses!! Hope all of you are doing great and enjoying the year.
I am a nurse in the Philippines. I was working before as a PICU nurse for almost a year and half. Well, I really enjoyed it alot specially the great exposure that I had in that area. Although, the hospital didn't pay me that good per month (250$), still I felt that I am really a competent nurse in action, I was like those nurses that I am seeing in some medical programs on television, such as "House", and it made me feel motivated.
I am starting to feel less motivated when our contract in that hosptal was about to end. I still gave my 100%, or even exceeded that; no absent, no lates, skillful etc., since the hospital promised us that they are going to give us a permanent position if we do good.
Since here in the Philippines, it doesn't matter if you are skillful or dedicated nurse if you don't know someone inside the hospital getting a position is little or vague: I was not given a permanent position after my contract.
Since, my desire to work as a nurse was really high; for almost 2 months, without tiredness, I passed thousands of a application letters to different hospitals, but none of them were willing to give me a job but they were offering me "nurse trainee or nurse Volunteer postion" despite I am already an experience nurse, which at first I declined, but later on accepted it since I don't want to stop doing the nurse function.
I worked in hospital for 2 months without any compensation, until I became worn out and I felt being abuse, so I decided to quite. First, I went to the office of our chief nurse, to ask when the hospital will be giving me a position.
During that time the chief nurse was on his desk, writing something and wearing formal attire. So I picked up my courage after, a soft knock on the door I went inside and greeted him. "Sir good morning, I am just wondering since I am already training here for 2 months, I just want to know when will I be given a postion?", I asked. "Why? are you in a hurry?" he replied while looking at me fiercely.
"Not really sir. Since, I am trying to become an independent it is really vital for me to have a monthly income" I replied.
"Lets see what I can do for you." he said.
On that day I never return in that hospital.
As of today, I went back to college taking up a different field. I am looking forward to become a professor in science.
Although I am taking a different career path, I will always be a nurse by heart forever! Hoping that I will be given a chance in the future to go back to nursing.

You will always use the lessons and experiences from your nursing career which is a good thing. I too am leaving the field (after 38 yrs). I have found another way to help people that is very rewarding.
