Taking courses before or while in LPN program?

Published

I got accepted to start in the LPN school but will have to take general education courses while in the nursing program or will have to take general education courses now and wait to fall next year to start LPN program. My advisor says she never had anyone to do this and its a recipe for failure. I really want to get my LPN to work towards my RN. The program is nine months..any advice? Has anyone done this before?

I had a chance to enter a LPN program in 2013, but like you I would had to take general education courses at the same time. I decided to take the general ed classes first, from the community college (main reason because I knew I would apply to an LPN-to-RN program and I would have to take the pre-requisites general ed classes anyway, the general ed classes in the LPN program would not transfer over).

I am so glad I took the general ed classes first. I started the LPN program in Aug 2015. My classmates who had to take A&P and Life Span in addition to the nursing courses had a REALLY TOUGH time - six didn't make it; it would have been more, but the school allowed them to take and transfer credit from an online college-offered winter session course. Because I had taken A&P I and II, and Life Span, I had 1.5 days per week less in school - more time to study the other classes.

IMHO, take the general ed classes first.
