Hi all,
I couldn't find the state forums. I know they are around but I can't navigate to them. Anyway I finally got accepted to the Accelerated Nursing Program at Stonybrook. Its a 12 month program for 69 credits.
I start in July and I wanted to get some reading done before classes start so I can get a head start. Does anyone here attend this program and could tell me what to start reading? They haven't given me a course schedule yet so I don't know what classes I'll be taking first. Although I'm pretty sure Fundamentals of Nursing will be in my first semester.
If anyone else can recommend anything please do. Thanks alot.

Hello, IcanHealYou,
I moved your thread to the NY forum.
You can find the states by finding the yellow toolbar just below the allnurses logo. Find, "Regions", and click on the drop down menu to "United States".
Good luck in your nursing program.

IcanHealYou,
I am planning on applying to the Stony Brook accelerated program for 2009 and was wondering if you could share your experiences in getting through the application process and being accepted to the program? How competitive did you find admissions to be? What do you think you did in order to be accepted? How long did it take them to notify you of acceptance after you applied? Any other info you think is important is greatly appreciated!

Hey Equest,
If you look on their site they have the required pre reqs as well as other requirements such as 3 letters of recommendation. I actually got put on an alternate list which means I wasn't accepted at first. They told me in January when I applied in September and I got another mail saying I was accepted in 3/7/08. I'll always remember that date =D. I believe it's more competitive than private schools since it is a lot cheaper and the program at Stony is more established.
I'm not going to recommend but I'm going to tell you to get the application on September 1st, fill out the whole thing in one day. Start your personal statement, which will be 3-5 pages long (Double space). They will ask you basic things like why did you leave your field to go into nursing, what makes you believe you will cut it as a nurse and one thing about the healthcare services in general.
Before applications are available you should get recommendation letters from your professors or if you work, get it from your employer. I suggest one work related and the other two academic. Stony also has their own forms for recommendations you might be able to find it before applications are released.
Here are my credentials to help you make further judgements:
Biochemistry BA : 3.1 GPA
General Chemistry: B+
Anatomy and Physiology I and II: A
Microbiology: A
Volunteer Experience
Research Experience
Lifeguard for six years
At first I thought all the higher level chemistry courses would ensure my acceptance but I believe all they look for at first is GPA and your grades for the prereqs. But of course don't just concentrate on these things, you should go volunteer at a hospital at least, so they know that you are motivated.
Don't hesitate to contact me if you have more questions. =) Hope this helped.

Hi IcanHealyou,
I got accepted in the same program as you did the accelerated program starting this july 2008. I would say just go through the course title and read whatever you can as it won't hurt at first place to read.
Is there any suggestion about on or offcampus housing? as I will be moving to this region from another country.
Thanks
Hey Deep =D,
I guess we'll be seeing each other this july. I don't know the area of Stonybrook too well so I can't suggest about off campus housing. I'm actually going to be living on campus, although they haven't made arrangements for me yet. Sorry.

Hi IcanHealYou,
How is SUNY Stonybrook?
I am currently filling out my application for the July 2009 start and was wondering if you can help me out with what specific points to include in the application essay and what my reference letters should highlight. I am a Front Desk Supervisor at a gastroenterologist's office and the doctor that I work for is currently writing me a letter of recommendation and wants to know if he should write about my personality traits, volunteer experience, research, etc.
Thank you so much for your help and I hope school is going smoothly for you!

Any updates on with the housing situation in Stony? Is it cheaper to live off campus?
Also, how was the program? Insanely intense, moderately intense, etc?
