Starting a nursing home

Hello,

I'm 21 years old and currently in nursing school, and I have decided that working as a bedside nurse for the rest of my life just isn't for me. I definitely plan on putting in the necessary time (hopefully no more than 4 or 5 years) at the bedside to gain valuable experience, but I just don't see myself doing it when I'm in my 30's, 40's, and so on (unless I'm thrown into management or go on to become a CRNA.) I am glad I am going into nursing because I know the profession will open up a lot of doors for me. Nursing basically = opportunity. My question is...how hard is it to start a nursing home? I am aware that it is extremely difficult to run one (I know an administrator), but it sounds like an awesome business opportunity. I know a few home health agency owners (an area that can also be extremely lucrative), but not 1 nursing home owner.

My question is how hard is it to start a nursing home? Are there any individuals/owners on here that are willing to share any helpful resources? Right now it is just an idea, but I am hoping I can someday go through with it because the business side of nursing appeals to me more than the clinical side...

Thank you!

Sean

I am no expert in this area, but my Daughter-in-law has been in management at a nursing home for many years, and we were discussing this issue one night, or at least close to this issue. She told me that someone cannot just open a nursing home somewhere. The State regulates how many nursing home "beds" are allowed in an area based upon the population. She said their facility couldn't even add on without State approval, and part of that requirement would be running at or near (not really sure) full capacity for some amount of time. As I said, I am no expert, but maybe this little tidbit of information will be of some assistance.
