Start on Nicu floor

Hello everyone!

So, I started my new Nicu nursing job last week. Well, it was hospital orentation, so I haven't actually started on the floor just yet. I also did my nursing orentation too last week, which went really great! My nursing educator on the Nicu floor told me that some new nurses start working on the nicu floor and end up not liking it. I thought to myself that is not going to be! This has always been a dream for me! I have researched so many videos on the youtube and nicu interests me! So, that kindof bothered me when she said that to me :( I felt as though it was a bit discouraging towards me or something :(

Neways I start working on the floor with my preceptor this monday :) I have already met my preceptor and she is very friendly!

Please I ask everyone to say a little prayer that the nursing educator, my preceptor and everyone on the floor be patient with me as I am a new nurse to the nicu! Please also pray that I do well too :) Thanks everyone here on allnurses.com for being so supportive too! You all are great!

    The funny thing about NICU (at least my unit) is that people either want to get out immediately or they stay forever. Kind of bites for getting seniority, lol. It sounds like you're a keeper, though :yeah:

    I love being a NICU nurse. It can be extremely challenging and heartbreaking, yet incredibly rewarding. Find some good unofficial mentors on your unit to bring your many questions to after orientation is over. Experienced nurses appreciate questions because they lead to better care for our little tinies.

    I'm so glad you were able to find the right job for you--it's wonderful to have work you truly love. I couldn't quite tell from your post, but if you are a new nurse (or even not) give yourself some slack. There's a lot to learn and it will take you years (sorry for that...), but you will find the challenge exciting. Enjoy the ride :).

    Thanks everyone! Today was a great day a long 12 hour day, but great day! I have a great preceptor that is patient with me, thank goodness! I feel that it is a calling in my heart, through my prayers :) I know that I will have to face difficult situations here and there in the nicu, that is when I need to take a deep breath and tell myself that I can do this and this is where God wants me to be :)! I have 6 weeks of orentation, which I can't learn everything, but hopefully I will get the groove down of time management skills,assessments,etc.

    Wow, your orientation is only six weeks? I just got done with a 14 week orientation and I still feel like I am constantly learning and asking questions! Good luck starting in the NICU! I love it so far!

    Sounds like your preceptor is working well with you! I agree that 6 weeks seems short. Don't be afraid to ask for an extended orientation if you feel like you need it. :)
