Speciality or not?

I am having a hard time deciding whether to go into specialty nursing in the ER or stay on Med/Surg and gain more experience? Anyone go straight into specialty from graduation or any insight on hitting the ground running?

I have 11 years of nursing experience, all 11 of which are in pediatrics. I strongly disagree with the notion that everyone "needs" 1-2 years of med-surg experience. You don't need a med-surg background to be a pediatric nurse. I have worked with many nurses over my career who entered pediatrics as new grads. I also went to nursing school with people who went straight to ER. The economy was significantly better in 2007, however, and a lot of new grads these days have to take what they can get. If you get an ER offer and that's your goal, take it.
