So many paths, it's confusing.

Hi everyone! I have been stuck in an unfulfilling career for over ten years, and a few months ago, I finally figured out what I want to do when I "grow up". :D I would love to be a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse.

Currently I have a BS in Math & Computing. I researched the aBSN option, but it would require me to quit my job, and, well, quite frankly, that isn't an option. I need to pay the bills. Also, the school that offers it is one hour away, on a curvy road that I really dislike. LOL!

My more realistic options are: 1) Get my PN at the community college, then get the LPN to RN online, and the RN to BSN online, or 2) Get my ADN at the university that is an hour away, then complete their RN to BSN online program.

Either way, I would probably further my education through them to become a PMH nurse. I'm more focused on becoming an RN or getting my BSN first, so that I can switch fields.

Any advice or experience with similar situations would be greatly appreciated!

The only problem I see with option 1 is that you cant fully get an LPN-RN online without attending clinicals. If your ultimate goal is RN I would just try your best to find an ADN or BSN program that does night classes/clinicals or possibly a weekend program.

Thank you! This is exactly the kind of information I need to know! :)

You may also want to research job postings in your area: what are the requirements? While an ADN is still offered, there are some saturated areas where you will be unable to find a job without a BSN- and even still the competition is tough. Before making a final decision on a school, you should be aware of the likelihood of landing a job with whatever degree path you choose.
