Hi everyone,
I have my skills test coming up and there's something I can't figure out -- I don't remember learning it in class and can't find it in the book, so I'm hoping someone can help me. When you give a pt a bedpan and toilet paper, where do you tell them to put the toilet paper? I know it can't go in the bedpan if you have to take a specimen or measure output, so do you give them a trash bag?
And also, do you do all the measuring of output and cleaning of the bedpan in the pt's bathroom? Or if you do this in the dirty utility room, do you have to take your gloves off before leaving the pt's room, and then put another pair on when you get to the utility room?
Thanks for any help...I don't know if I'm overthinking all of this, but I keep coming up with questions that I don't know the answers to!

First one, not 100% sure but i'd give them a trash bag if you had to take it for testing.
If the bathroom is equiped to do all the measuring (hat, and extra pull down to clean(usually only in hosp's) do it there. Otherwise wear one glove down to dirty utility and bring and extra with you. You'd have to make sure there was a hat in there already though. Plus, it really depends on your patients. When i was in clinicial the woman would use the commode in her room then i'd have to take it down to du because of something that was in her urine.

Somehow, I've never, ever had this come up. I've never seen someone use a bedpan and wipe themselves. Usually, if they have the ability to wipe themselves, they would use a commode or regular toilet. If they do use a bedpan, I've always had to do peri care for them.
I don't think giving them a trash bag would help much. I would just lower their bed and place the trash can within their reach (but again, never seen someone wipe themselves while on a bedpan -- I think it would be kind of hard).
ALWAYS measure the output and clean the bedpan in the resident's bathroom. Taking it out in the hall to the dirty utility room while it's still full is: 1) disgusting; and 2) an infection control issue. You also run the risk of spilling it.
If you must take it out into the hall, at least empty it first and place it in a trashbag so that you are not spreading germs around.
Thank you!!
