Size limits

I want to be a flight nurse but I need to know if there could be a lagit chance for me to get a job. The problem is my size I'm 6'3" and weigh about 235. Is that to big to fly on a helicopter? I know its to big for some but Im wondering if that is to big for all? I just dont want to chase a dream that will never happen.

No, you are not too big. Half our medical crew weight about 235#. We even have some pushing 275#. Most programs have a weight limit, ours is 220# with helmet and radio. Obviously our management team does not enforce this policy.

I agree that it's not too big. The reality is that many people start their flight careers at a hospital affiliated program, so they are initially hired from within. That will often get you over that first hurdle...if you were to apply for a flight spot off of FlightWeb, for instance, that states the weight limit is 200#...you would likely not get an interview. There are ways around it. And I know of a few programs that don't really enforce the weight limit policy.

Thanks for the encouragement! Another question I have is what type of aircraft fly bigger crews? At our hospital we have EC 135's which from what I gather are on the small end.

The EC135 is not all that small, really. The Astar is pretty small, lol. The BK117 has room in it for the patient, but it's smaller for crew...less shoulder room and leg room. None of them have tons of room. The EC 145 is like the BK body with an EC 135 front end...essentially. The new Bell is pretty ginormous, though. We have a nurse that's easily 6'2" and close to 300# and he flies in either the BK or the EC without issues. Can't say he's comfy, but he can do the job well.
