Sitter

Published

I work for an agency as a CNA and tonight is my first night working as a sitter for my local psychiatric center. Most of the patients I heard are minors so it is quite different than the LTC residents I've had in the past. I am nervous as to what is expected of me since it will be my first time as a sitter. I am working the 11pm-7am shift. I am excited as to what new experiences I will have tonight but will love some pointers or advice to get rid of my anxious gitters. Will it be a lot of ADL's ? Or mostly watching them over? Thank you!

I think it all depends on the client themselves. Each experience will be different. As a 11pm to 7 am shift I would be thinking you will be there mainly for safety reasons. You might make sure they are not wanders, and make sure they get to the bathrooms safely. Perhaps help them get drinks during the night extra.

The care plan I'm sure will tell you everything that you will be required to do for your shift.

Hope things go well for you

Sitters on psych units typically watch to make sure the patient doesn't hurt him or herself. The patient may be completely able to do all ADLs without help. In fact, that's probable. It could be a boring night. If the patient is awake, you might play a game or two or have a conversation. Make sure the staff plans to give you breaks so you can stay awake.
