Should I wait to apply?

Published

Hi everyone,

I am looking for some advice. I finished my ADN program in December and passed the NCLEX last month (February). I am also currently taking BSN classes. I will finish my BSN this upcoming August. Now my goal is to work in pediatrics. However, pediatric units are very small in community hospitals, and there are hardly any opportunities to be hired as a new grad there. However, there are new grad programs at plenty of children hospitals, but nearly all require a BSN. The only one that does not require it is 2.5 hours away. I have talked with many of my connections into pediatric units, and even they can't assist until I complete my BSN.

I have considered working on a different unit at a local hospital, however I do not want to waste anyones time training me as I have a goal I am set on and am willing to leave as soon as I can get into a pediatric unit.

I am wondering what advice/recommendations any has. Should I work somewhere while finishing my BSN and leave when the opportunity arises? Or focus on completing the BSN, since its one more semester, and apply to places that direct towards my goal?

I would like to add that I have a job not related to healthcare. So finances are not an issue. I am wondering though if waiting too long would put a negative look on my application?

I would apply to the Children's hospitals nurse residency include on your resume "BSN completion date August 2023".   Many new grad programs start in September.  By the time you get through the hiring process, often 3-4months, August will almost be here.

Hope you can find a great position that is supportive of a new grad.
