Should I quit my NP program?

I am just curious, what part of the country are you located in, and how difficult is it to land a job as an NP?

To those who have completed FNP programs, did you find that your program prepared you adequately to work as general practitioners? I am a little wary about the lack of clinical hours (600 hrs in my program) to learn about children, adults, and elderly.

My FNP program prepared me very well. But it also takes small groups-there were 10 students admitted per year & everyone had passed ANCC cert exam on 1st try. I did not realize until about 1 year after graduation what a terrific education I had received. The first year you are adjusting to new role/responsibilities, then it hit me how much I had learned!!!

Is it better to specialize in a specific area and be an expert within that area or be a generalist?

My program sucked big time, but I think you could stand a chance if you had some really good teachers in your program. I had about 2 good full time teachers and the rest were awful. Even then, you'll have to teach a lot of good info to yourself as they'll have you writing crap about nursing even in the grad program.

Don't worry, and don't quit based on the education. You'll learn what you need to after school. Just get a decent doc to work with that likes to teach. As far as the generalist or specialist, just do what you like best as the knowledge will come eventually.
