Should I give up

Published

I think I'm wasting my time. The thing is, I was never good at science (biology & chemistry) as I thought I was. I took an Intro to Biology course last year at my community college as it was required to get into A&P, but I barely passed with a C. Then I failed chemistry but it was not required which dropped my gpa down to 2.8. As for my application, my gpa right now is 3.4 but I heard I need a 3.7+ to get in. It's really bad because I already forgot everything I learned in Biology, and so I was lost during my A&P lecture and I just could not understand anything my instructor was teaching. Should I drop A&P if I have no clue on chemistry and biology subjects? Or should the textbook cover over the basics at least for the first chapter? This year I have to make sure I get all A's at A&P I,II,III and electives. I don't know what to do. I'm 19 and this is my second year at college and now I'm thinking maybe this isn't the right career to choose.

Thanks

Is nursing something you really, truly want?! Have you ever worked as CNA? I think that helps tell you if you will love nursing because you get a better picture of what it will be like. But if you really want nursing, then DO NOT give up :-) Nursing is tough, but if you want it, go for it! Your A&P most likely will cover basic things from chemistry and a few from biology.

One majorly important thing, you say you have to get all A's in your next classes, work towards that but don't freak out about it because you just stress yourself out and if you don't get an A it won't be any fun :-( If you don't understand the material go to the professor or ask other students for help! Figure out how you study and learn material best and study study study!

So decide if you really love nursing enough to deal with all the fun stuff...because it will be tough. If you really love nursing, go for it! Study your butt off and do the best you can! Just remember that no matter how long it takes you, in the end it will be worth it!

I was always a strong student. I only every had to study for Chemistry in high school and my mom was always meeting with my HS chem teacher because I was always at risk for not passing. I did pass but 18 years passed before I decided to go into nursing and had to take chemistry at the college level.

A&P I was a lot of memorization for me, A&P II was also memorization but also application and connecting the dots.

Studying for the pre-reqs required a big time commitment. I already have a BA in Management. Yes, I studied for that degree and I wrote papers, but I never studied as hard as I did last year completing 7 pre-requisite lecture courses and 4 labs in 2 semesters. If you need other general ed courses you can space out your pre-reqs so your course load isn't as demanding.

Also, if you don't get the GPA you need there are other ways to get into the program. My school gives preferance to LPNs and EMTs. Maybe take a CNA course and be sure you want to be a nurse. Then if you don't get in on your first try, keep trying and look for other schools or a backdoor such as getting LPN before RN program.
