Shift Question

Hi..

I have a question.. At my hospital it is typically 8hr shifts.. We have several nurses that pull 16s put that is their choice... I got my schedule a week ago and my unit manager has me scheduled for a 12hr night shift, I work day shift.. But at our hospital day shift is suppose to cover other shifts as needed.... Can she make me do a 12hr shift, when I work 8's... Who would I need to ask about this??

She probably can. First, I'd ask her to clarify this and remind her you were hired for 8s. You can also ask HR what the official policy is.

If your manager feels she really, really needs you because staffing is so short-it is vacation season-then I'd just advise to suck it up and do it if it's only once. You never know when you're going to need special consideration.
