Shadowing

So I was looking for some insight about shadowing an already registered NP for some experience before applying to the graduate programs I have my eye on. What are everyone's thoughts about shadowing? Has anyone else done this and did it help with the application process/getting in? I will finish my BSN in May and want to start applying to grad schools right away. Thanks for any advice!!!!

I've heard of some people having such a good experience during their NP job shadows that they've been able to use the NP as someone who will write them a letter of recommendation. I say it can't hurt!

I shadowed both NPs and PAs in gen practice, a PA in ortho, and a NP in nephrology. It helped me determine that I wanted to become an NP, and certain aspects of various practice options I liked/didn't like. I wouldn't say that it made me realize exactly what I want to do, I still have days when I think I want to do different things, but it gave me a good idea of what I like and don't like about chronic mgmt vs acute, gen vs specialty, etc. I work in an ER as an RN, so I spend alot of time "shadowing" the providers when we are having slower times, that gives me more input as well.
