Second Careers

I will be starting an ADN program in the fall. This will be a career change for me. I already have a BS. Unfortunately, a direct entry/accelerated program was not an option for me (I had a little difficulty in the grades department back then).

Although its a long way off, what's been your experience with second career job hunting as a new graduate? Does an unrelated BS degree help or hurt job prospects? Any interview questions to be prepared for? Anything you wish you did differently?

thanks for your input!

I am the same as you. I am a 2nd career person and ended up doing the ADN because I couldn't manage the accelerated program

I just got my 1st job and was told that my previous job helped them decide on me (I was a mental/physical case manager).

Awesome! congrats on getting a job. After lurking on these boards, I get a tad nervous about job prospects with "just" the ADN.

If your previous job experience or skills/knowledge are relevant, it may be an asset. However, unless that previous job was in healthcare or human services, a potential employer may not believe it adds any value. In that case, it would be up to you to make the connection. For example, if you were a waitress, you can let them know about your customer service expertise & ability to prioritize.

If hospitals in your area have made a commitment to reach a BSN staffing goal, they may have shut the door on new grad ADNs no matter how wonderful your skills are. . . I know it's hard, but try not to take it personally.

Best of luck to you in your job search
