Specializes in psychiatric, geriatric.

Hi everybody out there,

it is good to know that there is a nursing network around the world and I can somehow be a part of it.

I am a Registered Psychiatric NURSE living in Germany at the moment. I want to move to British Columbia with my family. Currently the registration process with The College of Psychiatric Nurses of BC is finished and I am eligible to obtain interim permit.

According to Healthmatch BC the chances for international nurses are not too good at the moment. Nevertheless, I applied for some positions thourghout BC. Up to now I have not got any answer. How do you appraise my chances?

I need an employer in order to migrate via the Provincial Nominee Program.

With 16 years of exprience in different acute psychiatric settings, I hope to find a job in a hospital. Do you think it would raise my chances, to come over and deliver my speculativ application personally?

Thanks a lot for any assistance.

Best wishes to BC

Applications all go through the centralized Human Resources Departments. They screen the applications and filter them down to the hiring managers.

Having said that, if you were planning on coming to Canada on a holiday, it would make sense to bring along your resume. Call a few hospitals and see if you could set up a tour with a manager in the Psych units.

Don't really know how BC is hiring these days. It's been rough across the western provinces. How much care in the community does Germany have these days? Here in AB, psych services are going more and more into community care and having nurses as outreach workers. Inpatient care is for more acute episode resulting in short stays. Then there is the ever popular geri-psych that has a huge waiting list. Pardon my sarcasm. My provincial goverment loves to slash services and then brag on about how they have improved things.

Think about St. Paul's in Vancouver. Downtown hospital.

Unfortunately there are not a lot of nursing vacancies of any sort in BC that are being filled at this time. The province has just undergone a change of leader in the currently governing party but that is unlikely to loosen things up at all. The annual provincial budget, released on February 15, 2011, will result in further layoffs of RNs and RPNs, with perhaps an increase in hiring of health care aides to fill the gaps. Historically, mental health services in BC have been underfunded and disrespected - considered to be a "non-core" or nonessential service. (I have a family member who struggles with mental health concerns who has even more struggles in obtaining care.) The odds of an IEN being given employment in this climate are very, very small. And since it isn't the responsibility or even the interest of the College of Psychiatric Nurses of BC to worry about the emplyment of those they deem eligible for registration, there isn't a lot to be done. Yes, you may write the Canadian exam, yes you may be registered as a psychiatric nurse in BC, but you probably won't have a job as a registered psychiatric nurse anywhere in the province.

The days of easy entry and quick employment for IENs in most parts of Canada are past. That bubble burst almost a year and a half ago.

i'm IEN also planning to move to BC and I had one year experience as a graduate nurse in a surgical unit here in new brunswick and waiting to pass my RN exam.what will be my chance of getting a job?
