But, unlike Paramedics or EMTs (part of your title), nurses can also have very open wording in their practice acts which allows them to expand skills and medications to adapt to the job. This can include various skills and medications including intubation, ECMO, PICCs, chest tube insertion, arterial line insertion and RSI outside of the hospital walls. EMTs and Paramedics usually have very defined skills which are listed and rarely can they be expanded upon without special permission from their board. While some might say restrictive, other might say a form of quality control. It would be difficult to have 1000 nurses in a hospital all trying to maintain proficiency at PICC or aline insertion or intubation.
