Hi
Has anyone worked as a 1:1 nurse? If so, what was it for? I interviewed today for a position for a 2nd grader with severe seizure disorder. She has a companion animal with her every day at school. I was told not to interact with the dog and to just sit with her and watch her during the school day.
I am finishing up a summer school nurse position next week. I give a med to an autistic student and i help teach special ed students for most of the day.
I was just curious about this new possible position i interviewed for and if anyone has had similar experiences or advice..
Thank you.

Yes. I do. This usually falls under private duty nursing rather than school nursing. I have patients that also get care outside school hours do I am there a couple of hours before school, ride the bus to school with the child, accompany the child throughout the day & perform any assessments, treatments or nursing interventions as outlined in the plan of care, and ride home with the child. I have other patients that I meet at school and accompany throughout the day per nursing plan of care. Parent drops off/picks up.
And then a third type "medication bus runs" children who the public or special school nurse can handle their in school needs but needs a nurse for the bus ride in case Diastat, respiratory med, or epipen is needed. Most commonly seizure precautions/ Diastat children.
There are several nurses in the private duty nursing that to 1:1 nursing care in school for children with everything from epilepsy, feeding tubes, medically complex/fragile, to trach/vent kids.
Thank you justbeachynurse. Yes, she does require diastat for her seizures and she gets dropped off and picked up by her mom. I will check out the private duty nurse section..
Thanks again :)

I don't want my reply to get lost so I will post it here. I am a home care nurse who accompanies a child to school. I ride the bus with her and sit in her classroom all day. I don't sit right next to her. I sit in the back of the room. There are pros and cons. Pros are I can read, or surf my phone, cons are that I work 11 hour days without a break, and the boredom. The main thing you need to do, besides caring for the child, is keep your mind occupied.
