School advice

Hello everyone!

I'm a business graduate from SJSU with a BS in business concentrating in accounting. While the work is interestingly enough I've found it ultimately unrewarding. Additionally my fiance was diagnosed with MS last year and I'd like to be better equipped to taking care of her in the future.

Are there any resources that someone can point me to for breaking into this field? I have a lot of general academics crossed off but I know i'm missing a lot for instance i took chem but not anatomy.

Would it be worthwhile to start as an LVN? Should I try to go directly to RN because of my degree? Does my degree change what nursing school i should try to get into?

Any information appreciated thank you!!

Tony

Take your prereqs at a community college if possible. I was able to take 7am classes while working in a full time 2nd shift position. I'll assume you have a regular 9-5 job. You can definitely take evening courses after work. Take the TEAS/HESI exam after you finish your a&p courses. Then apply to ABSN programs if your finances allow for it. If not, CCs are cost-efficient and most CCs have concurrent enrollment agreements with 4 year universities to obtain your BSN within 1 year of graduating from the ADN program.

Avoid LVN programs unless there are no other options.

I am sorry about your fiance's dx. I agree with previous poster regarding bypassing LPN. You would only be prolonging your period of debt. Is your fiance still working? I would live like a pauper while you get your prerequisites at a CC. If you can get in an accelerated program without starting in a financial hole, do it. But you don't have to become a nurse to know all there is to know about MS. Don't do it for that reason because you might hate it. Are you comfortable touching people? Can you provide intimate care? Or is this just an over reaction to dx.of MS? Are you OK working 24/7 shifts for 365? I put up with an awful lot of crap as a nurse but had already felt stifled with desk jobs and wasn't sorry I changed. Not always happy but never sorry. I graduated with minor debts and was able to discharge them quickly. No kids.

It is NOT worthwhile to go for LVN school any more. Just for ADN/BSN. Your degree does not change what nursing school you go to; however, if you choose to go the BA/BS to MSN route, then it technically can change what nursing you go to.
