Scheduling....who gets preference

Pt with 13 yrs of experience or a FT position. Let me just say that this FTer has quit without 2 weeks notice, quit the job she was at without notice and was then accepted back and given her pick of shits (which included mine!) We have another FT nurse that in a month or so new and was working FT weekends (double on the weekends and picked up a few shifts during the week) Her shifts are being reduced too!

I was told.....FTers always take preference "thats the way is everywhere"...This isn't the only place I've worked at and its normally been...yes, FT does get to take FT hrs and most often every other weekend off, but......they also try to work around their most senior and or dependable staff (like me...I haven't called off in years!!)

Sooo....I'm I just being crazy? It is not as if she will be getting every other weekend off, just why should she get the pick?

BTW, this isn't a case of penalizing a newer nurse...she isn't new to nusing? This begs another question or leads to the retention issue we have....why should nurses stick around if this is how it will be?

(Part of me says it is time to move on, but the other says..why not fight, why should I have to leave?)

Each facility probably has its own ways of handling shift assignments - i know at mine it is not based on FT vs PT but rather seniority for the purpose of bidding into an assignment and then it depends on the unit.

Some unit will do a first come first serve basis (as long as the shifts are balanced), others go on what has already been established (if you have been working your shift longer you usually get to keep it), others do a combination of the two (you get a skeleton schedule, usually a weekend shift, then request your other days).

If your facility goes by FT status to determine who gets the pick of shifts, you can 1) try and change it by getting most people to agree to a change, 2) accept it and continue on, or 3) leave and find a place more conducive to your schedule.

ROFL....ok, I'll admit this is totally not where you were going with this thread, but I was wondering if this was a new vernacular I hadn't heard, LOL....and then realized it was a typo! :D

As for the substance of the post, preference (if needed) goes to seniority, regardless of how much they work. Exception is per diem, who DON'T get preference anywhere, as they are...well....per diem.
