I applied during the original posting. It closed on August 28th and I was contacted on September 5th for an interview. It might be different since the application was reopened, but my experience with them is that the HR process is pretty quick (usually one week or so to hear anything). Hope that helps, good luck!

Hey, I actually got a denial email a few weeks later, I am hoping it was just because I wouldn't be completing my BSN until after the start date. I applied again on the 31st and have my fingers crossed I will get through this time since I get my BSN in a month ? You should, I have heard they have a great program! What is your background? Good to hear. I'm currently in Eugene, OR and checking out what's out here. I have a BSN and got my license last Dec 2013. I'm a novice nurse however I've had extensive practicum in all areas. I'm coming from a Philippine school and recently made my move to Oregon. I'm staying with friends at the moment. Although they are moving on soon. But for now, I get to stay with them. I went to a dialysis job fair last week at Embassy Suites next to PDX and it was a positive experience. They seem to be hiring a lot of nurses. I'm waiting to hear from them this week. It was with Fresenius. I have also interviewed with a long term care facility locally and it went well. Which parts are you in at the moment? Are you looking all over the state?

That's awesome experience! I currently work at the state hospital in psych nursing, but quickly found that I missed the floor nursing that I did during school. So this is the last residency I will qualify for, since I hit my year mark next March. If you are ever interested in psych, the state hospital is usually easier to get into, people frequently come for a while and then move on to different experiences. I have looked mainly in commutable areas, since I live in Portland, and am not able to relocate right now.

Thanks for the tip! You know I've contemplated about doing psych nursing since I feel I excel at making people at ease. I also have a good friend who has bipolar disorder with schizophrenia. Although he lives with his parents and is overall in good health, he still has this hidden condition that nobody knows and sees. I feel like I can learn and provide more support if I get trained professionally at a psych unit. I have also attended last summer a class provided to families by the National Alliance on Mental Illness. I encouraged my friend's mom to attend. We took the class together. It was a very enlightening experience for both of us. My friend's mom felt that she wasn't alone dealing with this problem. I was able to see what different families go through and how they have coped throughout the years.

Do you mind telling me what the name of the state hospital is? I think it would be wise to explore and apply there. Thank you in advance.

Of course, it is called Oregon State Hospital! Here is a link to the job page: Oregon: Values at Work. I have learned a lot there! It has been a very interesting job too, since most of their patients are criminal. Out of all of there units, only three at the Salem campus are civil commits. The rest are either being stabilized before they go to trial for a crime, or have been found guilty of a crime and are being stabilized while serving time. They do, great benefits, and they do a few weeks training for the hospital, and then I think it was about a month on the floor. I haven't heard from Salem but still have my fingers crossed!!
