The search for a motorhome in the Western High Plains of Kansas has just not panned out. Poor planning on my part made it more difficult. I am now looking into trying to secure a room in a home in South Florida for my first assignment and shopping for the motorhome in the spring at the end of my assignment. Has anyone tried this? I foolishly listed (and paid) at one of the roommate search sites but only had one contact. I responded quickly but so far have had no response back. Spoke with a couple realtors who advertized in the local paper (in Florida) as having rooms for rent but they act as agents for others. I suppose I could go with the provided housing but would rather have the subsidy and find my own. Any ideas?
Thanks

Don't know about the roommate situation but Florida can be a good place to purchase an RV or trailer if you can buy from a private owner (not need to get a loan through a dealer) as many retired people come to FL in their motor homes, then due to illness or death of a spouse no longer have the need for it. Many times the family doesn't want to come all the way to FL from the far north to bring it back so it can be bought for less than you would pay elsewhere.

You might want to try www.craigslist.com . It's a free "classifieds" organized by state then city. In my area anyway you can find lots of "roommate wanted" situations. Hope this helps!

I had very good results with roommates.com. However, I have only chosen this route once with good results. I have opted for the apartment the rest of the time...initially figuring if I want to stay in the area, I can meet the people ahead of time when I do the roommate search.
Thank you for the replies and information. I haven't accepted an assignment yet so I haven't looked extremely hard for a roommate yet. I did go to the online section of the newspapers in the area I am looking and spoke with a couple realtors who have properties with rooms to rent. May go that route with a place on the beach. Sent a lot of inquiries at one of the search sites with no responses. Won't be using that site again. Thankfully I only signed up for a few days and didn't have to pay that much. Live and learn.

FYI
I am in Ft. Lauderdale..Most places to rent are first, last and a months security..very costly. As for a roomate situation look on Craigslist or check the Sun Sentinel(local newspaper). Even a roomate situation can be costly $500-$ 1200 a month. Also keep in mind the expensive cost of living. It amazed me how people here are so focused on cash..there is no middle class..just upper and lower. Also be forewarned that driving here sucks(esp in the tourist season) The wages here aren't that great when you look into the cost of living. The weather is also a factor.
