RN - trying to transfer to Postpartum

I have almost 3 years of adult intermediate care nursing experience. I would love to get into NICU or postpartum nursing, but in a part time position. I've spoken with a NICU manager and she said without experience I couldn't go part time after orientation in the NICU. Does anyone know if the same would apply for a mother baby unit? My husband is transitioning into a more demanding job and full time night shift is killing me as is. Thanks for the help!

It depends completely upon the hospital, the unit and the manager. There's no way we could answer that.

I had a friend who worked peds and started part-time or PRN in postpartum. She later left the peds position to go full-time in postpartum and eventually moved to L&D. It is possible to do part-time in postpartum or mother baby, but like klone said, it entirely depends on the individual unit and manager.

NICU I think is highly unlikely to hire you part-time without NICU experience as it's a very long orientation (3-4 months usually) and full-time is best to help solidify what you've learned because babies (especially sick ones) are a whole different animal.

Good luck!
