RN Refresher Course?

Hi,

I'm an RN who graduated with an Associates Degree in 2009. I was 7 months pregnant at the time so I did not look for a job right away. Now it's almost 3 years and 2 kids later and I still have not worked as an RN. I'm currently working towards my BSN and I've been applying at various facilities but no luck so far. Is it time to take a refresher course or is there still hope that I might be able to get someone to hire me and give me a chance? Any thoughts would be appreciated. :)

I'm thinking you would still be ok. When I was looking, I contacted the HR depts and was told that at 5 years out they would want a refresher. Unfortunately times are tough right now which may be why you are not hearing back. Good luck.

Yeah, but the OP has never worked as a nurse. I would think a refresher would help increase your odds anyway.

I don't know how much the refresher course will actually help you, but it can't hurt the resume. Just do it, and hope you get some bites soon. Your situation is not that uncommon. If you can't get into acute care right away (if that's what you want), try applying to LTC/rehab, methadone clinics, psych jobs, things that typically have a higher turnover; you'll probably have better luck getting a job, not necessarily that you want to keep forever lol, but you never know. You may find that you like it. There are many good LTC places out there, one of which, if I were still living there, I would definitely work there. Don't know the reputation of the LTCs near me now as I have no elderly parents that need LTC, but I digress lol.

The point is: pastures are sometimes greener in places you originally thought would be brown.

you are getting nursing education in the BSN program. I do not see why another course would benefit. However, if you can work part-time in a medical facility that might help
