RN pay rate in TX

Published

Hi to all,I am considering relocation to Texas - Houston or Dallas areas. Can anyone advice on RN pay rate in these areas? I have 11 years of RN experience in acute care hospitals, currently on tele floor. I see very controvertial information on nursing forums ( most are from years ago) and on the sites like indeed.com or salary.com. I was wondering if i can hope for at least $50/hr rate as an ICU staff nurse? I work in sacramento currently and make $67/hr for night shift. I know texas pays less, but want to have realistic view as what to expect...Any advice will be appreciated.Dave

The cost of living in Texas is FAR lower than California. As such, the wages are also lower. You are very unlikely to make $50/hr. More likely in the low $30s/hr. If you work float pool you may get into the low $40s/hr. I heard just last week of a nurse who moved here from California, 12 years experience. He was offered $40/hr as a float pool ICU RN for the corporation - meaning he traveled to whichever area hospital he was needed at.

The vast majority of nurses in Dallas and Houston with your experiential level have never achieved an hourly wage of $50 as full-time staff. I know of nurses with 40+ years of experience who have not even reached $40 per hour.

Most Dallas hospitals will pay you in the mid-$30s hourly, plus or minus a few dollars. Facilities in Houston will likely pay you in the mid to high $30s per hour. Sorry, but Texas is generally a lower-paying state for nurses.
