Hello, first off this is my first post here. Seems like a good place for me to learn and get some very helpful/useful information!!

I am currently a first year student at Rio Hondo College. I'm doing GED and some pre-req's as of now and hoping to get into the Registered Nurse program. My question is, is there somewhere else I can go that skips the nonsence? My complaint is, there are pre-req's to the pre-req's, and I also need to take GED classes at the same time to graduate. Its very time consuming, and a waste of my time. I have not been in any nursing classes or anything close to nursing because I do not yet meet the requirements. A lot of these classes are things I took in highschool, except now they are costing me money!! Some are just plain rediculous and a total waste of my money.

I was woundering if there are any Registered Nurse specific schools in the LA area that let you start in actual nursing classes. Even if they dont start you in the actual program, but at least in nursing releated pre-req's. I am well aware that nursing school is no breeze. My family is made up of nurses, great ones might I add :) . I cannot speak from experience ofcourse, but from what they speak of, its a very rewarding career, and something I wish to be a part of soon.

There is no school that will let you skip the pre-reqs................they are a requirement of any program. They help the schools selelct who they will allow into their actual nursing program.

yes, i understand the situation with the pre-req's. The ones related to the nursing program. Its just the other stuff that gets on my nerves. I have to sit in an art class for 2 and a half hours because its a requirement. Its such a waste of time. Oh well, do whatcha gotta do i guess ;)

They want the nurse to be well rounded. That is why there are so many humanities classes, possibly another language, history, government, etc.

And those others are also your college requirements for any student, not just those in a nursing program.

I'm new to this message board, so I might fumble in some places, but I learn quickly. I just wanted to respond to this thread even though it might be ages old (I didn't see a date).

I'm responding to you California nurses from Maryland because in 1.5 years time I'll be joining you with the best of luck!!

Anyway, I wasn't sure if they do the same thing in CA as they do in MD, but if you talk to your school advisor, there might be ways to skip a lot of the prereq's through CAT's (computerized adaptive tests). In MD, at least, they call them the CLEP exams and I got to get out of algebra and stats for taking them and passing them with a score above 60. The tests are made to show you have a good knowledge base in the subject.

Talk to your advisor, s/he mght be able to do something similar for you. The test costs like 50 bucks or something like that, and you don't have to waste your time in boring classes totally unrelated.
