Renasys very like a Vac Dressing, different brand however

Have patient A on a renasys for a perianal abcess. Just as I was leaving yesterday the machine started beeping showing a leak. On inspection of the dressing, the bottom 1/4-1/3 of the dressing had lifted up completely. The RN on the PM duty as a per diem nurse who did not have experience with either vac/renasys

I looked at trimming the film of, but would have had to trim it back to the soft port (the part that connects the machine to the dressing, however felt that it would be very difficult to achieve a seal around the soft port and to be honest I envisaged that it would most likely to have continued on leaking.

I attempted to run this past my oncall nurse. Being unable to contact them I made the decision to go ahead and replace the dressing as it was the best likelihood of ensuring a seal achieved and allowing the machine to keep doing what was needed.

Apparently that was the wrong decision and got chewed out by my clinical manager. "We didnt want the dressing changed at the weekend"

(I thought I didnt say "no ****, at 1540 I wanted to go home, staying for an extra hour to fix this damm dressing was the last thing I wanted to do after the shift that I've had")

When I stated that in my experience when the dressing pulls away and the leak is around the hose, its very hard/if not impossible to simply trim it and patch it up and achieve a proper seal. I was told "well you arent in district nursing now". Didnt actually realise the basics of negative pressure dressings changed depending on the service in which one is working

This is not about blowing my horn. As a DN I visited one client three times weekly for 8 months to change their renasys. I also had another one who I visited twice week for 8 weeks to change renasys. I did the Vac change for another client which was changed three times weekly for 12 weeks. I also tended to be the go to gal if a vac or renasys malfunctioned. While I'm still fairly green in most areas of nursing this is one skillset that got cemented very well and early on

What would others have done?
