Reluctant to ask, but...

Specializes in Ortho/Uro/Peds/Research/PH/Insur/Travel.

I have been considering applying to the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. They are now offering a $25,000 sign-on bonus for nurses PLUS the possibility of loan repayment (depending upon the agency that you work for). Now, here's my greatest concern...I'm gay. I understand that this may, uh, ruffle some feathers in this particular forum. I am seeking feedback from those individuals who can speak - either first hand or second hand - regarding the challenges that someone like myself may face in a (pseudo-)military setting. If you disagree with my "lifestyle" and that's the foundation for your message, please do not respond.

I would not worry about it too much. I had a very outspoken gay Army friend, he loved his job.

I am a new commission to the Army Nurse Corps, so, I cannot tell you how LGBT are treated except from his accounts.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Its still a "don't ask, don't tell"environment. Just as I don't discuss my sexual orientation at work, I would think that would be okay in your case also. Good luck.

Specializes in Anesthesia.
