Reciprocity

U.S.A. Hawaii

Hello fellow Nurses,

I am seriously wanting to move to Hawaii but I don't know how to go about obtaining a Nursing license in that state. When I looked into it online the site read "no reciprocity". Does anyone know what the process is? Thank you...:) Yolanda

Licenses do not have reciprocity, only the NCLEX exam has reciprocity meaning that the results are valid in all 50 states.

They are referring to the fact that you will need to complete an application to them called License by Endorsement and that they do not accept licenses from any other state. They will be able to use your NCLEX results but you will need to meet their licensing requirements.

Thread moved to the Hawaii forum where you will be able to get more information on working there.

Hey stcroix:

http://hawaii.gov/dcca/areas/pvl/boards/nursing/application_publications/

click on "nursing--endorsement only" and print the packet and instructions in the PDF file. If you have to call the phone numbers, remember the time difference from wherever you are.

It takes about 6-8 weeks. If you plan to work in Hawai`i, facilities and agencies will require that you present a recently documented two-step PPD, documentation of all your immunizations and/or titers (chickenpox and rubella/rubeola,) and a physical within the last year from your doctor. And have an updated resume with references.

Any state you want to practice in has a website for their board of nursing, just google it.

Thank you for the feedback. I will now move forward with the process. By the way this is a great site. I'm glad I joined. Y

I had an active license in California, and while they were reviewing that they gave me a temporary license for the hospital who hired me in Hawaii. It is only good at the facility which hires you. It is a blast living and working in Hawaii. Go for it.
