Rare Diagnosis

I had an old fella in LTC with it-when he was admitted to the LTC he had been treated for recurrent c-diff for ages and was negative for it but remained symptomatic for the rest of his life (a few years) the infectious disease doc had him on Questran 4 times per day, any time she tried to decreased it he would have symptoms again. I didn't know it was all that rare.

I had never heard of it before, but it appears that it is the "collagenous" part of it that makes it rare. This is only the abstract from an article, but it gives a nice, brief summary of the condition:

Take home message is that an individual can have the condition without a C. diff infection, and that the pseudomembranes may be a result of the collagenous colitis.

This patient was on questran because she didnt have a gallbladder, I think I remember that in her history however questan is used to help treat this so who knows, all I know is she was taking it prior to affirmative diagnosis. They were trying all kinds of abx and probiotics. My poor pt kept having negative c diffs and they wouldn't giver her any lomotil or immodium. I felt so bad for her.
