Questions about distance learning

Published

I wanna finish my pre reqs so I'll be eligible to take the pax-rn to get into sinclair community college nursing program but I don't think my job will let me work weekend warriors and I do need the health and dental insurance, pay, ect. I was wondering about taking classes through distance learning. Have anybody took classes this way, do anyone think it's a good idea?

I've taken a few distance learning classes through Sinclair. Only ALH 103 & 104 so far. Getting ready to take PSY 208 as print-based distance learning next quarter. ALH 103 I took on videotape & 104 I took via internet. I liked the internet class a lot. The videotape class wasn't bad either. You had to go out to campus to take the exams at the testing center, but it wasn't bad at all.

I think some classes are easier to take as distance learning classes than others. The ALH classes are both easy DL classes. English classes would probably be fairly simple to do as DL, but I'm not sure what's available.

I know that there are some online classes (not through sinclair) that would probably cover other classes, but I wouldn't suggest doing science classes that way if at all possible. Those you really need to know & it's better to get the hands on knowledge through labs, etc. in my opinion.

Before you do anything though that is not through Sinclair, you should meet with an advisor in order to make sure whatever you take is accepted by Sinclair. You don't want to spend money on something that will not transfer.

I don't know how many hours a week you work, or what shift you work, but you could probably take a class or two on campus & maybe one as a DL class. Sinclair also has weekend classes, so you could maybe take a class that meets then if you aren't working weekends.

Hi Amyliz, thanks for the advice. I work second shift from 3-11 and every other weekend. I work 37.5 hours a week. Starting next month we get to make up our own schedule but it still might not be exactly how we want it. I was thinking maybe see if I can drop down to part time or just take a class at a time which will take longer unforutnately. So I don't know what I'm going to do, I said I'm going to talk to the counselor and she what she says about dl classes.
