Questions for current NPs

Published

So I have a favor to ask of any NPs who are willing to help. I have an assignment where I am supposed to interview an NP and get the answer to these questions. I did have an interview lined up with a local NP, but unfortunately the NP had to cancel due to her being too busy. I was hoping some kind hearted souls on here would be willing to help a student out.

Thanks

What are the steps to becoming an NP?

  • Schooling:
    • Average time spent in school
    • Average cost
    • Clinical hours

    [*]Licensure/ exams

    • Cost
    • Length of licensure/renewal period

What are some barriers to being an NP

  • Physician resistance?
  • Scope of practice?

Areas of Practice

  • Your specialized area?
  • Work independently or under supervision of a physician?

Any thoughts on becoming an NP

What are the steps to becoming an NP?

  • Schooling:MSN is the minimum needed level of education
    • Average time spent in school - I pursued a different road: MSN in management and leadership - 2 years, post MSN adult health CNS 2 years, post MSN peds health CNS - 2 years
    • Average cost - a lot - to be honest I don't remember
    • Clinical hours - 100 hours for the MSN, 600 hours for the adult health CNS, 550 hours for Peds CNS

    [*]Licensure/ exams

    • Cost $30-120
    • Length of licensure/renewal period 2 years

What are some barriers to being an NP

  • Physician resistance? I work with excellent MDs who treat us (APRNs) as their colleagues
  • Scope of practice? autonomous and independent

Areas of Practice

  • Potential area examples - varies greatly
  • Your specialized area? - nephrology
  • Work independently or under supervision of a physician? I have a collaborative agreement but rarely see any physician

Any thoughts on becoming an NP

  • Advice? Decide prior to starting school the course you want to pursue
