Questions To Ask When Registering

Hi,

I'm registering for school tomorrow.....although I am only taking pre reqs at this point I still wnat to be educated on the program as a whole......I have a list of questions I plan to ask.....BUT I was wondering what you all think is most important to ask/know about my program......

Any advice or words of wisdom?

I would probably ask how many cohorts they have a year, what entrance exam they use and what are the average scores of those who get in, how many people get in each time, what classes do they consider competitive, and is there any way to increase your chances (points for taking Ll your pre reqs there, or points for high grades). Also I would find out how many times you're allowed to take the entrance exam. Just my two cents :)

You can also make sure they are accredited, their NCLEX pass rate, and how many people actually graduate from the program (compared to the number that first start in that cohort).

Thanks ladies all good ideas!!! Keep em coming!!!

besides everything already posted, here's what I wish I'd known before I started:

  • retention rate (# of students the start with versus actually graduate)
  • what NCLEX prep programs they mandate (Kaplan each semester? the review prior to boards?)
  • what (if any) assessment exams you have to do each semester, or prior to graduation (HESI each semester, an exit HESI?)
  • clinical prep? (Do you have to go to clinical site the day before you have clinical to get pt reports?)
  • estimate of costs besides tuition (books, uniforms, assessment testing, NCLEX review courses, etc)

Definately find out what their board passage rates are before you commit to any nursing program. The school that I attended prepared us well and has one of the highest first time pass rates in our state. However, a friend who attended another school took her boards 6 times and never passed. After doing some research, she found out that her school only had a 75% pass rate on the board exams. She was out of alot of money and time with nothing to show for it. Do your research on your school before committing.
