Question

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

How long or how many semesters does it take to finish the prerequisites? I know it varies from schools but how long does it usually take?

Thanks

It took me about 2 semesters for the science prereqs. If you have to take additional ones like I did, one more. I applied to Regis University and Samuel Merritt. Regis required 6 units of religious studies while Samuel Merritt required Interpersonal Relations which is not a standard class for graduating college.

Good Luck!

It's taken me 2 yrs, but I have only been taking 1-3 classes per term :wink2:

My jaw dropped before getting to the part where you said "1-3 classes per term" :chuckle

Thank you both for your replies :)

I got my pre-reqs done in 6 quarters, but I was only taking 2 evening classes with labs while working during the day. If you go to school full time, you could take 3 or 4 classes. Summer is also a great time to take classes because they condense the number of weeks for the same material.

It depends on whether you are going for a ADN or a BSN. Basically, most schools like to see:

4 semester units each of Anatomy and Physiology with labs

4 semester units of Microbiology with lab

3 semester units of Nutrition

3 semester units of Speech/Communications

3 semester units of English writing

4 semester units of Chemistry (General, inorganic, organic/biochem - this is usually the pre-req to get into Anatomy and Physiology classes at some schools!)

3 semester units of General Psych

3 semester units of Developmental Psych (from womb to tomb)

3 semester units of Statistics (this is optional at some places)

3 semester units of Critical Thinking (this is optional at some places)

The toughest part will be getting the classes! At many schools, Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology are so impacted, there are waiting lists to get into those classes. (This is because they have limited lab space.) So I would get into as many classes as you can each semester. That is, if you cannot get into Anatomy or Physiology one semester, at least take Psych and Critical Thinking so you aren't "wasting" your time. Eventually, you'll have more credits at a specific school so you'll rise in the registration hierarchy (e.g. you can register earlier than the newbies).

Go ahead and check out some nursing schools in your area and you'll get a fair idea of what is required. The sooner you get your pre-reqs done, the faster you'll be eligible to apply to nursing school. Good luck! :D
