I am 99% certain that Surg Tech is profession I want to pursue. A lingering concern though... For those of you who have kids, how much flexibility do you have with your job when kids get sick and you know you have surgeries scheduled the next day? Thanks!

I was a surg tech for 14 years...you just call in like any other job...it's actually very flexible with kids especially if you can get into an out pt clinic. Youdo have to work weekends, holidays, and take call if you are in a regular hospital. It's usaully only one summer and one winter holiday, one weekend a month, and you can usually get someone who wants extra money to take your call. Great job!! Pay in Michigan is $15-24 I think... I haven't done it since 2006. Go to http://www.AST.org for more info (association of surgical technologists) also AORN (assoc. Of Operating room nurses) may have some info, but I found them to be anti-tech so who knows. Good luck!

Hello: I'm not a surg tech, but a OR nurse. We work very closely together as a team.. I work @ a hospital. As the other poster said you can call out if you need to. But, we receive occurences each time you call out.. Too many (over 6 per year) and you get in trouble. They fall off after a year. But they understand that your family comes first. Not sure how it works in surg center. I would think they have less staff, so if you call in it could be worse for the remaining staff. Good luck to you..... This is a great profession. Our hospital in MD starts out @ $18.00 per hour.:heartbeat:D
