Question about repeating science classes...

Published

Ok, so I'm a little confused about this one...

I live in southern california and i'm exploring ADN programs I can apply to after I finish my last pre-req this semester. I've found that MOST programs require that you take all your science classes within 5 years of applying to their program. However, they also say that you can only repeat a science class once to be eligible. Well, I already had to re-take anatomy (because I withdrew past the deadline to drop without a W) so what happens if I apply for a program, and it's been more than 5 years since my last science class? Would it make it near impossible for me to get into a school that doesn't allow more than 1 repeat of a science class, or would this factor not count. Thanks for any and all input!

Contact the nursing program advisor at the schools you are interested in to find out the school's policy.

I was just working with an academic counselor over the question of how to best repair my older grades while getting my prerequisites out of the way. Two things I found out that may help your situation.

First is that academic counselors are great! Bring all your transcripts and sit down with one at the college you'll be taking classes at. I literally got a month's worth of built up questions answered, with a check-off sheet, in under half an hour.

Second is a program you should check on with your counselor if you have a bad semester in your past. Depending on how long ago it was, if your current semester is rockin' the high grades you can petition that one bad semester is removed from your older records. The reasoning is that someone who's been out of school for a long while and comes back, and shows that they've really got their ducks lined up now, can get a little redemption and re-do the past.
