Question about preceptors/orientation

Nurses New Nurse

Published

This may be a really dumb question but I am just curious...

I am a new grad who passed my nclex just this past October. I really want to keep my freshness as a new grad and get offered a job at a hospital, but no calls. I love that hospitals give you a around a 12 week orientation with a preceptor, and I love that, because as a new grad I feel like I would need that.

If I took a job at a dermatologist office as an RN, I would no longer be considered A new grad anymore if later down the road I got hired into a hospital... so would they still offer a preceptor to me with orientation??? because I doubt you really use your nursing skills in an office setting, and i feel like if i got hired into a hospital later i would need to brush up my skills a bit.

Yes, you would be offered a preceptorship. Each hospital department is much different and you will need to be trained specifically for that department.

Yep. I (a brand new grad) started the same week as an experienced nurse. We both got preceptors and went through an orientation period. AFAIK, this is standard for any new position.

You should still get an orientation period with a preceptor, however the length may vary. If you work in a doctor's office for a while (or in any position as an RN really) you might not qualify for new grad residency programs anymore though, in case you were looking into those.
