question about interventions

Published

hi! i need some suggestions for interventions for a nursing diagnosis of "risk for developmental delay r/t hospitlization"...i would greatly appreciate your help! thank you and have a great day!

if a child is going to be in the hospital, followed by a recovery period at home, what will he be missing out on?

what won't he be doing r/t illness/surgery, immobility, act intolerance, cognitive delays, socialization?

you will get some of your answers by acknowledging the interruptions and limitations.

I am taking these directly out of Nursing Diagnosis Handbook: A Guide to Planning Care, 7th Edition, by Betty J. Ackley and Gail B. Ladwig, pages 441-442:

  • "use a neutral, indirect style when addressing areas in which improvement is needed, such as a need for verbal stimulation when working with clients.
  • assess whether exposure to community violence is contributing to developmental problems
  • validate the client's feelings and concerns related to child's development
  • assess for the presence of substances that could cause developmental delay
  • assist family to identify appropriate skill-building activities for child
  • provide emotional support for family members' reactions to evidence of developmental delay
  • if possible, refer family to a program of animal-assisted therapy
  • provide support groups and education on human immunodeficiency virus and caring for infants with this diagnosis
  • provide developmental care interventions to preterm infants to improve neurodevelopmental outcomes
  • provide neonatal positioning procedures for preterm infants to prevent extremity malalignment, skull deformities, and gross motor delay
  • counsel parents, siblings, and caregivers about the importance of smoking cessation and the necessity of eliminating all secondhand smoke exposure
  • teach caregivers of children appropriate developmental interactions; use anticipatory guidance to facilitate preparation for developmental milestones."

I would also recommend that you do a search of the Internet for more information on developmental delays and their treatment.
