Are CNMs expected to do circs? I have read about CNMs doing them before, so I know it's possible, but when I go to school, or once I get out there practicing, will I be pressured to watch/assist/perform circs? I cannot and will not have anything to do with this procedure, whether it's watching, helping, or performing. Will this be a struggle?
Thanks!

Here's a link to start out:

Sounds like you'll be safe in the vast majority of settings.

No one has to perform circs.... most of the docs in my area don't even do them!
I live in a high-circ area. That's why I was worried.
Even still, I don't think anyone has to do them, particularly midwives- since I think becoming skilled at circ's is kind of an "extra" for them, that's the way I understand it, but others here may know more.

Hi
I worked in a high volume practice for many years and we (the CNMs) were required to to circs. Some of the staff left the practice because they were opposed to doing circs. I am now in a smaller practice where only two of the midwives do circs. In this practice less of the clients choose circumcision for their sons. The midwives that do the circs are able to bill for them - so its extra money for them.
When you are looking for a job - find out exactly what their expectations are. If you have an ethical issue with circs ( or anything) find out if they will honor it - or is everyone expected to participate. These issues will come up and you should know what you are required to do prior to accepting a job.
