question on becoming a NP

Published

I'm an LPN and have been working for over a year now. I'm interested in becoming a NP, but I'm not sure what steps I need to take. I plan on applying for the RN program, once I get my RN what do I need to do next? Thanks for any info.

You have to have a BSN to apply to a master's program, so I would recommend going directly into a BSN program next. Otherwise after getting your RN degree, you would need to get your BSN before applying to graduate school. In 2015, you will have to have a DNP not a master's degree to be an NP, so that will add at least a year of schooling to the process. Hope that helps!

The DNP is NOT a requirement yet, only a SUGGESTION.

And...I remember when the BSN was supposed to be the entry level for RN....and that's never happened either.

Look to your state's BON website. As far as I know (and I could be wrong) but no states have adopted a MANDATORY DNP by 2015.

SOme schools have an RN to MSN program, so it's not always necessary to have a BSN first.
