Question for AF nurses

I am trying to decide if I want to join the AF nurse corp. I will graduate with my BSN in May and I am considering all my options. I spoke with a recruiter today and the bonus and loan repayment could be a hugh help! I also really like the ideal of travel and the nurse preceptor program. My husband and I are both with ideal but I would really some insight of other's experiences joining. Could anyone give some information on their experiences in the AF nurse corps.

In the AF you could end up in LRMC/Germany but it doesn't happen often I can tell you that. Like athena 55 said that really isn't close at all. There are really no front lines anymore like in past wars ex. WWII. There are zones and even that doesn't really mean anything as even the most established bases get subjected to small arms attacks occassionally. For the most part though the hospitals are pretty safe, the military makes sure of that. As for the deployments in the AF you most likely will be around Iraq. Right now though with afghanistan picking up, in the news reports anyways, who knows. The army has a lot more CSH to deploy to.

silly question..but what is LMRC and CSH? I am still trying to figure out all the abbreviations. How long are the deployments usually for? I saw a previous post that the deployments are usually shorter for the AF. Is that usually the case? And what are the chances of deployment within the first year? The deployment does not scare me... I just want to make sure that I have the experience needed to properly care for the troops.

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center - LRMC, Combat Support Hospital -CSH

Army Nurse Corps, PROFIS now 6-9 months (that includes MOB)

As has been mentioned on this forum before, there are a lot of Officers who have placed their name on MEDCOM's volunteer page and haven't deployed yet, and there are lots of Officers that are on their 3rd deployment (that I know). I am not privy to who and how they pick from "the list" but some Additional Skill Identifiers - ASI's are in greater demand than others (like CRNA, for example)

Chances of deployment within the first year? As good as anyone else's, but I would hope that one would get at least one solid year of nurse internship under her/his belt before being deployed
