Quebec and NCLEX

Hi,

I'm a licensed nurse in Quebec and I live in Vermont (really close to the border!). I've been working with CGFNS and VT bord of nursing to get licensed in Vermont for a year and a half now, and I am finally at the stage where I am asked to register for the NCLEX.

In the registration form, they ask me where I graduated. For countries, Canada is listed as a choice. Great. But then Quebec doesn't exist as a province? Also, in their list of program code for North America, there is no code provided for the entire province of Quebec. I am denied registration because of this issue. I called Pearson Vue (registration people), NCSBN, Vermont Board of Nursing and Quebec's board of nurses, they ALL tell me to ask somebody else, playing ping-pong with me.

I can't believe I'm the first Quebec nurse to go through this. Anybody has had this issue before?

Thanks for your help!

What did you end up doing? alot of Quebec nurses use Minnesota to get in. The process is easier.

I’d like to follow up on this too, I am from NY but moved to Quebec with my then husband. Now I am finished my DEC and will be going to McGill in the fall, I would like to take my NCLEX to be able to work in the states. However when I go on the NYS nursing board site there are streamlined applications but the exception is Quebec. What did you end up doing ?

Hey guys,

First off, I went through Vermont because that’s where I already live! That makes my pathway to NCLEX a bit different than being in Quebec and wanting to get a job in the US.

For the NCLEX registration, I ended up using the general « Canada » code and it worked. I passed the exam last December.

Thank you for responding, so in my case I actually live in NY too so it’ll be similar to your process. Can I take the NCLEX after my OIIQ and use that ?

I first went through CGFNS to get a “CES”. That took like a year (covid…). I do have a bachelors and I’m not sure the DEC works. CGFNS will basically tell whichever board of nursing you’re applying to that your education was equivalent to a US nursing degree.

Once the nursing board receives that, then they have a couple more requirements (for vermont : a certain amount of hours worked as a nurse in the recent past, a proof of english proficiency (TOEFL test) if you studied in French…)
Theeeen finally the board of nursing contacts Pearson to authorize you to take the test. Then you can register.

hope this helps

Hi am currently in the same situation that you were. Ready to my registration for the NCLEX exam but can't cause I don't have the code. I am from Quebec.

What is the "general Canada code"? Can it work for me?

Yes. And get a work permit. Find a sponsor. I would check online.

Hi I'm in the same boat as you... Quebec to Florida.Depending on what you've done already, but for Florida is more... Isabelle Langlois explained it pretty well above...I will add finger screaning to the list to.

Please what’s Quebec NCLEX code to register for the exam?

Hello all I would like to know I am also an R.N from quebec .Is the NCLEX exam similar to the OIIQ exam ? it seems that in north america we are the only one with a separate exam? thank you

I also finished CEGEP nursing this year and am trying to take the NCLEX through Pearson. I registered through the Minnesota Nursing board since it is supposedly the fastest and easiest for Quebec. They said I can now register with Pearsonvue to take the NCLEX, but I can not do so since Quebec is not listed as an option on schools graduated from and the "Canada" code stated above doesn't seem to work.

How can I do this to register and take it? I know it can be done since I have a classmate that just did it and moved to Florida.
